what′s new : Thanks for helping get the ACES bill passed! - June 29, 2009
The American Clean Energy and Security Bill was approved last Friday by a 219-212 vote - close enough that some of us at Faith in Place were actually streaming the debate live from the CSPAN website. We're sorry we weren't more productive on Friday but this was a historic moment and somehow we just had to watch, even through the relentless procedural points about whether there was a full copy of the bill on the desk in the house or not.... Democracy in action is so far from pretty that we can't help but wonder if there's a better alternative out there somewhere, but we know in our hearts that the only worse system is all the other ones. Thanks for calling, emailing and writing to your congressmen and women and letting them know where you stood on this important first step in controlling US greenhouse gas emissions. Most of our fence-sitters in Illinois ended up voting yes and it's because they heard from their constituents.Now it's on to the Senate, but we'll let you know when that's happening. You can turn off C-SPAN for a while and go outside and enjoy the summer!
