what′s new : Religious Leaders Respond to Call to Action! - August 13, 2008

The Midwest Governors Association has been engaged in a conversation about a Midwest strategy to address climate change for some time. They are expected to come out with some principals for a basic policy proposal some time this fall. A carbon cap and trade proposal for the Midwest is expected to be the cornerstone of this proposal but the details have not yet been worked out. We worked with Protestants for the Common Good to collect signatures of clergy and lay-leaders on a letter that lays out some parameters for what we think a good program would look like. They are in line not only with our Illinois Interfaith Power & Light Campaign but with the overall policies of the national Interfaith Power & Light state affiliates. They suggest hard scientific targets, moving quickly to a 100% auction (to avoid transfers of public money to private for-profit businesses) and creating a group to address the special impacts of higher energy costs on the poor. We were delighted with the response from clergy and lay leadership, and have posted the letter and signatures to the MGA website (midwesternaccord.org).

If you'd like to see who signed on, download the attached letter with signatures.
